Has anyone who lives in Rochester even taken a ride from 37 Wakefield St. down Summer, then left on Allen toward the Post Office and finally a right on Eastern Avenue down to Bluebird Storage on Route 202?
We suggest you do that today, before the City Council votes tonight to spend $300,000 of your money to buy six and a half acres where they want to build a third city fire station that will likely cost several million dollars more.
Rochester City Manager Blaine Cox said the city of Rochester is contemplating building a third city fire station in East Rochester, but "at this time there are no immediate plans" to do so, he told The Voice last week.
Well, if the City Council votes tonight to spend $299,000 of your money to buy the East Rochester parcel, I guarantee you it won't be long till those plans Cox spoke about come to fruition in a New York second.
We took a jaunt the other day from the main fire station down to Bluebird Storage, almost exactly 1.5 miles, mostly on the wide boulevard of Eastern Avenue, which could easily accommodate large fire trucks at 50 or 60 mph, if the occasion arose.
That's about a minute and a half by our reckoning.. So why do we need a third fire station a minute and a half from the main fire station.
I know they'll come up with a dozen or so reasons, but don't let them spend your money too easily.
We don't need a third fire station.
In addition to the $2 or $3 million dollar facility, you'd need 10 or 12 more firefighters at a coat of $1.2 million a year in salary and benefits.
How many fires did we have in Rochester last year. Not a ton, thank the lord.
We at The Rochester Voice are all for safety, but this is one gambit City Council should nip in the bud.
