We need turnpike signs to lower speeds during snowstorms, not state the obvious

When we were driving down to Dover to cover a trial on Tuesday we were surprised to see the electronic signs along the Spaulding Turnpike flashing the words, "Winter Storm" over and over again.
It had already been snowing for several hours, the pavement was slushy with snow ridges you could feel under the tires and yet those who operate the signs saw fit not to say "SLOW DOWN."
Not that it would have mattered. And it didn't.
We kept the car at a steady 40 mph, but watched as cars whipped by ours 60 mph.
With the snow-covered, slushy roadway any little skid can turn into a big pile-up and a lot of misery.
So we would suggest to whomever controls these signs that they should think of using them for things other than stating the obvious like, "It's snowing."
The Spaulding Turnpike should've had reduced speed limits to 40 mph on Tuesday.
We would urge safety officials to consider changing their policy to post lower speeds in inclement weather.
