ROCHESTER - First Church Congregational will be hosting weekly candlelight vigils in Central Square, in support of Ukraine.

Since Russia launched a full-scale military invasion into Ukraine, fighting has caused numerous civilian casualties and pushed millions to flee to neighboring countries.

First Church representative Linda Maynard describes the vigils as one way residents can show their support for the people of Ukraine and their independence.

"We're encouraging people to join us in solidarity for the people of Ukraine," said Maynard. "Bring your own candle, or one will be provided, or just bring yourself. All are welcome."

The Rochester vigils are representative of a large movement occurring across the nation. State and federal leaders are condemning the invasion and everyday citizens are holding similar vigils and raising money to aid relief efforts.

During a recent City Council meeting, Mayor Paul Callahan said, "there is simply no justification for the premeditated war we are now witnessing."

"We strongly condemn this senseless war, waged by President Putin, against the people of Ukraine," said Callahan. "We stand in support of the people of Ukraine, who are living through their darkest hours."

The vigils will be held in Central Square (at the Parson Main monument) Thursdays from 5:30-6:00 p.m.
