Tales to make you warm on such a winter's day

It was only earlier this week that I told the President of The Lebanon Voice the snowy winter of 2013-2014 was behind us and temps would be slowly climbing from now till Easter.

I could stand in the lee of the wind on my home’s south side and swear I could feel the sun ever so faintly warming my face.

Yeah, I told her that just like Lebanon road commish Larry Torno said after a slew of storms in December busted up his snow budget pretty good, it can’t snow like this all winter. Who knows, maybe the rest of the season it’ll be dry and mild.

I clung to that premise like Linus and his blanket, but to my chagrin, we were both wrong.

So now it’s back to snowy mountain, part deux. I say, Wake me up when the clocks change. By then it will be time for St. Patty’s Day, the start of spring and the Red Sox.

Speaking of the Red Sox, Jacoby Ellsbury, who signed a long-term deal with the Yankees will be sorely missed. One of my favs, Ellsbury tracked down fly balls and line drives as gracefully as a gazelle and single-handedly almost took the Sox to the playoffs two years ago in the midst of the chicken and beer debacle. Now the hated Yanks have stolen two of our center fielders in recent years, first snatching Johnny Damon in 2006.

Other than Ellsbury, many of the bearded wonders (Ellsbury never could grow one) will be back, including Mike Napoli, Shane Victorino, Jonny Gomes and of course Big Papi.

On a cold day in January, just thinking about the Sox, the playoffs and the World Series of last year’s has got to give you a warm, fuzzy feeling.

Then fast forward to today and the historic matchup between two of the greatest quarterbacks to ever toss the old pigskin and it gets even warmer.

Later this afternoon they will meet yet again. It’s unfortunate the Pats have to play in Denver, but this is where this epic battle will take place.

Over the decades the Patriots have had many nightmarish games in the mile-high city. Let’s hope this one is a dream come true.

Now a few end-of-week short takes.

First, why is when more than a dusting of snow hits the streets people drive like lemmings over the cliff to Market Basket to shop like the world is going to end?

How come you park in a driveway and drive on a parkway?

And finally. Did you ever notice that saying the word “twerk” in any surroundings, be it work or  social setting, brings a smile to people’s faces? Try it some time. Just say it and see what happens.
