DOVER - A Somersworth man is accused of leaving an anti-LGBTQ message at a Dover church last month.
Isaac Santiago, 49, has been charged with misdemeanor criminal threatening, Dover Police Chief William Breault said in a Tuesday release.
Police first got involved in the case the morning of June 20 after a sign was discovered attached to the front door of the First Parish Church, located at 218 Central Ave. in Dover. The sign contained anti-LGBTQ messaging and the threat of "Be saved today or you will perish in your sins!"
After further investigation conducted by Dover Police the suspect who left the sign was identified as 49-year-old Isaac Santiago of Somersworth. Dover detectives executed a search warrant on Santiago's residence and later obtained a warrant for his arrest.
He was charged with criminal threatening, a class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail. The charges include the possibility of an extended term of imprisonment under the state's "Hate Crime" statute; specifically alleging this crime was substantially motivated toward the victim's religion, creed, or sexual orientation.
Santiago surrendered to the Dover Police on Tuesday and was released on personal recognizance bail. His arraignment is set for the 7th Circuit Court in Dover on Aug. 12.
