Rochester native, SHS grad had passion for agriculture, seeing humanity bloom

MILTON - A dedication of "Victor's Reading Nook" in memory of Victor Joos was held at Nute Library on Saturday.

Joos, a longtime Milton resident, who grew up in Rochester and graduated from Spaulding High School, was a Peace Corp volunteer and regional director before moving to Milton with his wife, Annie.

Joos had a lifelong passion for agriculture and its sustainability, building his first greenhouse at the age of 16, according to his obituary.

Upon his return to Milton following his Peace Corp service, he and Annie opened Milton Gardens and later, Briar Patch Greenhouses.

Joos devoted much of his life to civic engagement and public service as a state legislator and in a number of Milton town positions, including auditor, treasurer, administrator and moderator.

Joos was also a Nute High School teacher, Nute Library trustee and a school board chairman.

He was also highly visible in the media having worked as a news reporter for Fosters Daily Democrat.

In retirement Joos served as a juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen, creating, teaching and presenting on the art of rug hooking.

He died in 2019 at the age of 81.

A large crowd attended the Saturday dedication, which was followed by a reception and refreshments in the library's Community Room.
