ROCHESTER - A petting zoo, pony rides and "touch a safety vehicle" will be just some of the fun kids and their parents can enjoy during Rochester's Annual National Night Out festivities this Tuesday from 5:30-8 p.m. at Spaulding High School Torr's Park, also known as "the triangle," adjacent to the city's Hanson Pines swimming pool.
Part of a nationwide celebration held throughout the United States, Rochester's National Night Out aims to strengthen police-community relationships and promote crime prevention.
For Rochester Police Chief Gary Boudreau the event is one of his perennial favorites because there is so much community support.
"Seeing families come to the event year after year, and the smiles on kids faces as they get to interact with emergency personnel as part of our touch a truck, it'svery special," he said.
This year's event will feature more than 20 local organizations and businesses, as well as local food vendors and live music.
Following the main event, a free family-friendly movie will be hosted by Guyer Travel International from 8:30-10 p.m.
While this year's National NighT Out has a lot going on for the youngsters and families, Boudreau said that there's another layer of benefit.
"The connection that are made between the community and the service providers is paramount." he said. "Many times we are never fully aware of the struggles people are going through, so to help facilitate connections with the resources in our community is invaluable."
