LEBANON - Shirley Jean Menter, 75, of Emmons Lane in Lebanon, died February 15, 2014 at Hyder House Hospice with her family at her side. Born January 24, 1939 in Kane, Pa. She was the daughter of Carroll and Thelma Fowler. Shirley at the age of 14 contracted polio and was in an "iron lung" for many months. Her will to live and zest for life became apparent at this young age as she worked to recover. She never let her illness define her life. She graduated from Warren High School, Warren, Pa. and Penn State University, State College, Pa. where she earned a BA in elementary education. Shirley taught school in Pennsylvania, California, and New Hampshire. After leaving teaching she worked at Foster's Daily Democrat.

Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, traveling, dining out and her dog Tiki.

Shirley is survived by husband of 30 years Albert Menter, Lebanon sons Darren Maxwell (Shari) Rochester; Brett Maxwell, Rochester; Jason Menter (Brooke), Saco, Maine; Justin Menter (Elisabeth), Berwick Maine and brother Richard Fowler (Shaanette) Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and 8 grandchildren.
