Nominations sought for prestigious 'Red Hayes Award'

ROCHESTER - The Rochester Police Department is currently accepting nominations for the prestigious Rochester Patrol Officer Community Service Award, also known as the "Red Hayes Community Ambassador Award." The nomination window is open until July 31.

The award is named in honor of Willis "Red" Hayes, a beloved Rochester police officer who served from the 1940s to the 1970s. Known for his buoyant spirit and exceptional communication skills, Red Hayes was a familiar and friendly presence in Rochester. His ability to connect with individuals, even in challenging situations, earned him the respect and admiration of the community. Hayes was known for his compassionate and supportive nature, and his approach to law enforcement emphasized guidance and positive interaction over hostility.

The award aims to recognize a current patrol officer who has significantly contributed to fostering positive community relationships. Nominees should exemplify two or more of the following criteria:

• Received public testimonials via letters, calls, or messages.
• Testimony from a fellow officer about the nominee's positive public interactions.
• Previous citations from commanding officers or civic groups.
• Demonstrated characteristics such as friendly public interactions, compassion, gregariousness, rehabilitation efforts, foresight in reducing tension, and active community involvement.

Both citizens and Rochester Police Department members are encouraged to nominate deserving candidates. Nominations can be initiated by the Chief of Police and will be announced through various media and public channels. Correspondence for nominations should be directed to:
