New metrics show virus hitting those in their 50s hardest

CONCORD - For the first time in several weeks no new hospitalizations were announced on Monday, a day that saw 35 new positive test results bringing the total of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state to 1,020.

Monday also brought the first weekly summary report on COVID-19 cases that show the sex and age group metrics as well as various categories of disease transmission.

The new data, which had been called for repeatedly by The Rochester Voice, shows that New Hampshire residents in their 50s have been hardest hit by the disease, with 22 percent of cases coming from that age group, followed by 16 percent each in their 40s and 60s, 15 percent in their 30s, 14 percent in their 20s, 8 percent in their 70s and 80s and less than 1 percent below the age of 9.

The new graphic also shows that community-based transmission, meaning no risk factors present, is the single-largest method of infections, at 32 percent, followed by 28 percent from international or domestic travel, 19 percent from cluster-associated transmission and 16 percent from contact with individuals with confirmed cases. Four percent of the infections were unknown.

Of those new cases with complete information, all are adults with 49 percent female and 51 percent male. The new cases reside in Rockingham (14), Hillsborough County other than Manchester and Nashua (4), Merrimack (1), and Strafford (1) counties, and in the cities of Manchester (10) and Nashua (4). The county of residence is still being determined for one new case.

For the first day in weeks no new COVID-19-related hospitalizations were reported; thus far, 152 (15%) of the 1,020 positive cases have been hospitalized.

Only five of the new cases have no identified risk factors, indicating community-based transmission continues to increase.

Meanwhile in Maine, numbers spiked upward to 698 with 65 new cases confirmed on Monday. Other numbers show 124 hospitalizations, with no new deaths. York County stands at 151 with seven additional cases reported on Monday.
