Maine man injured in fiery crash at Hampton Tolls

HAMPTON - A Maine man sustained serious injuries after his pickup crashed into an abutment at the Hampton Tolls and caught fire.

The single-vehicle crash occurred around 4:10 p.m. drawing a response from State Trooper who arrived to find a 2021 Ford F-150 pickup truck fully engulfed. The driver, Patrick Jones, 43, of South Portland, had serious but non-life-threatening injuries. A juvenile passenger was not hurt.

Hampton Fire/Rescue was called to the scene and extinguished the fire.

According to a statement sent out by the state Dept. of Safety, a preliminary investigation determined that just before the crash, the pickup was approaching the Hampton Toll Plaza on the northbound side of Interstate 95 when Jones suddenly changed lanes. The pickup then hit a concrete abutment next to a tollbooth and went airborne before crashing and catching fire.

Jones was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital for his injuries. The child passenger was transported to the hospital as a precaution.

Multiple lanes at the tolls were closed while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and during the on-scene investigation.

While impairment is not suspected to be a factor, all aspects of the crash remain under investigation.
