Madeline Galarneau ... co-founder of Milton Historical Society

MILTON - Madeline E. Galarneau, 98, of Milton, died September 20, 2020 at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Born August 21, 1922 in Milton, NH, daughter of George H. and Esther L. (Fielder) MacIlvaine, a graduate of Nute High School, she was a lifelong resident of Milton.

Madeline attended the former McIntosh Business College.

In 1976, she wrote the "History of Milton", published as a part of the Nation's Bicentennial Celebration and she served as Chairman of Milton's Heritage Commission.

Madeline was a charter member of the Township of Milton Historical Society, Past President of the Teneriffe Sports Club and of the Republican Women of Milton. She served for several years on the Publicity and Scholarship Committees of the Milton Woman's Club and for 22 years with Spaulding Bay District.

She served with Pack 155 as a Cub Scout Den Mother, a trainer of area leaders and Program Aide, the second woman in the state to earn the coveted "Den Mother's Award". She also served as a Girl Scout Leader and more than twenty years as Welfare Representative for the Salvation Army.

For eight years, Mrs. Galarneau produced and directed charity musical and variety shows.

Active in politics, she was the first woman elected to the Board of Supervisors of the Checklist, then served with perfect attendance for eleven years as a Ballot Clerk at elections.

She was a longtime local news correspondent for both the Rochester Courier and the Farmington News.

In recent years, she has been working as a Volunteer Tour Guide at the New Hampshire Farm Museum.

Widow of Milford L. Galarneau, Sr., she is survived by their 2 sons: Peter Jay Galarneau of Honolulu, Hawaii and Mark Alan Galarneau of Milton, 8 grandchildren: Carol, Scott, Natasha, Bryanna, Arianna, Melissa, Matthew and Amy Galarneau, 5 great grandchildren, also several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her son Milford L. Galarneau, Jr., granddaughter Cindy Fletcher, and brother Linwood MacIlvaine.
