MEREDITH - One person is dead and a joint investigation is under way following a fire at a home in Meredith that initially drew police who received a request for a welfare check.
When officers arrived at 164 Old Center Harbor Road around 6:45 p.m. they alerted the Meredith Fire Department after seeing smoke inside the residence. They also found an adult male unresponsive on the first floor.
Soon after firefighters arrived, located a small fire in the basement and quickly extinguished it.
The adult male was pronounced deceased at the scene. His name is being withheld pending an autopsy scheduled at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Investigators with the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office responded to the scene and are leading the investigation into the cause and origin of the fire.
At this time, investigators say they do not believe the fire is suspicious.
