MEREDITH - The man who died in a fire in Meredith on New Year's Eve has been identified as Fred W. Tyrrell, 81, of Meredith.
His cause of death was determined to be smoke inhalation, and the manner of death was accidental, according to the state's Medical Examiners Office.
Police were first on scene after getting a request for a welfare check. When officers arrived at 164 Old Center Harbor Road around 6:45 p.m. they alerted the Meredith Fire Department after seeing smoke inside the residence and finding an adult male unresponsive on the first floor.
Soon after firefighters arrived, they located a small fire in the basement and quickly extinguished it.
Tyrrell was pronounced deceased at the scene.
