Failing grades: New Hampshire found to have highest average student debt

New Hampshire has the highest average student debts and the highest proportion of students with debt, according to a new national survey.

Those statistics are from the personal-finance website WalletHub, which found that the average student loan debt nationwide is around $37,000 per borrower.

The study, which lists the states with the most and least student debt, compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 11 key metrics. The data set ranges from average student debt to unemployment rate among the population aged 25 to 34 to share of students with past-due loan balances.

  • 1st - Avg. Student Debt

  • 1st - Proportion of Students with Debt

  • 27th - Student Debt as % of Income (Adjusted for Cost of Living)
