LOWELL, Mass. - A Dover, N.H., man charged in the Saturday shooting death of a Lowell man will remain in custody following a bail hearing on Wednesday.
The shooting that took place outside a Hindu temple left Jose Ortiz, 43, of Lowell, dead and two others injured.
Paul Garcia, 38, of Dover, was arrested on Tuesday in Lawrence.
He faces charges of murder, armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery by discharge of a firearm, assault, and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Lowell police got involved when they responded to the parking lot of the Shri Swaminarayan Hindu Temple on Middlesex Street in Lowell around 4:55 a.m. on Saturday.
Upon arrival, officers were directed to two injured men, who were transported to area hospitals.
Ortiz succumbed to injuries at the hospital, while another male victim was treated and released and another took herself to the hospital where she was treated for minor injuries and released.
Police said they were told by witnesses that many in the crowd had been drinking and setting off fireworks prior to the shooting.
