CONCORD - Dental records confirmed what most feared on Sunday as a Bay State autopsy found that the body found in the woods of Abington, Mass., belonged to five-year-old Elijah Lewis.
The autopsy was conducted by Dr. Richard Atkinson, of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for Massachusetts.
Atkinson was able to positively identify the remains as Elijah Lewis using dental records. However, the determination of cause and manner of death remain pending further toxicology testing and further investigation.
It is likely that it will be a few months before there is a specific determination of cause and manner of death, which may be the determining factor in whether any additional charges might be forthcoming.
Danielle Denise Dauphinais, 35, Elijah's mom, and a man she was traveling with, Joseph Stapf, 30, were arrested in New York City on Oct. 17 on charges of child endangerment and witness tampering.
A Merrimack lake was searched earlier this week for evidence of his disappearance before the search moved to Abington.
Elijah's unknown whereabouts were brought to the attention of authorities by DCYF on Oct. 14 sparking an Amber Alert.
Investigators also noted on Tuesday they now believe Elijah was last seen at his Merrimack home sometime within the last 30 days instead of the six months timeframe they originally reported.
