ROCHESTER - An accident near the intersection of Wakefield Street and Milton and Chestnut Hill roads affected the Friday afternoon commute, including a detour around 6 p.m. that completely prevented motorists from heading north or south near the Lilac Mall.

The crash occurred a little before 5 p.m. and resulted in a utility pole being taken down, according to the Rochester Police Facebook page.

By 6 p.m. police had shut down Milton Road in the area of the Lilac Mall completely.

A message posted on the Rochester Police Facebook page around 5:30 p.m. told motorists "to seek alternative routes as the area will be temporarily closed off for utility pole replacement."

Motorists who headed north around 10:30 p.m. reported that traffic was being directed through a series of traffic cones as utility work continued.

The circumstances of the accident including how many vehicles may have been involved or whether anyone was injured were not immediately available today.

This story will be updated.
