City pays software firm to do translation for non-English speaking residents

ROCHESTER - The City of Rochester is using an advanced language interpretation platform to help city departments communicate with residents who do not speak English.

The name of the software is ConveyConnect, an advanced language interpretation platform.

According to City Manager Katie Ambrose, this innovative tool will empower city staff across all departments to better assist residents - and visitors - who do not speak English.

"The implementation of ConveyConnect aims to foster inclusivity and improve public service," said Ambrose. "This tool provides real-time access to interpreters in over 350 languages and dialects, including American Sign Language (ASL)."

The platform communication, whether by phone, video, or in-person interactions. Staff can connect to a certified interpreter in under 30 seconds, enabling swift and effective service for everyone, regardless of language.

The platform also features on-site interpreter scheduling and mobile app integration for teams in the field, ensuring that communication is never a barrier, even in urgent situations.

"Rochester is proud to lead by example and embrace technology that promotes equity and inclusion," said Kim Conley, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer. "Everyone should have equal access to the services they need, regardless of their language or background."

Ambrose says that the use of ConveyConnect aligns with the city's ongoing efforts to modernize services and prioritize the well-being of all residents.

She noted the program can also be used by visitors to the city.
