HAMPTON BEACH - When I lived at a winter rental on Hampton Beach back in the late '80s, the L Street Tavern was a fun, local restaurant with plenty of cheap eats and a cozy little bar in the back.
Not too long ago the whole restaurant area was turned into tavern seating with a wraparound bar featured on three of the space's four sides.
The L Street Tavern today is a trendy watering hole that still has the delicious food the former L Street Tavern was known for.
Since I was down there last week for jazz great Buddy Guy's Damn Straight Farewell Tour, I didn't want to get to full prior to the concert, so I opted for the scallops wrapped in bacon appetizer.
I made the right choice.
The large, luscious, perfectly prepared sea scallops were brimming with savory flavor that was only made more savory by the plentiful wrap of bacon around

each delectable scallop.
What I really loved about this appetizer was it came with a little maple syrup for dipping and a demi side salad comprising shredded lettuce and carrot under a sweet and sour vinaigrette dressing, perfect for cutting the sweetness of the scallops.
Now having a little Scottish in me, I unconsciously assessed that the price of $14.99 for seven large sea scallops probably isn't that much more than you'd pay for it at the local market at $22 a pound.
So this was a fantastic value.
Most importantly it had plenty of protein to power me through a wild and woolly concert.
A sweet night to behold for sure.
The L Street Tavern is located at 17 L St., Hampton Beach. Their phone is 603.967.4777.
