Adult reading program can land you some literary swag

It's hard to believe it's July already. Keep your eyes on our social media for children's and family activities including pop-up story times and pop-up crafts. Don't forget we have passes for museums. Ask us about reserving them.

Returning Materials

Beginning July 6th returned items will no longer be quarantined. You can continue to put your returned books and magazines in the drive-up drop box and DVDS and audiobooks in the drop box next to the building by the Children's Room entrance. You may also bring your returns inside and place them in the Main Desk drop slot if you are here to browse.

Adult Summer Reading

Welcome to our Adult Summer Reading Program! Read anything you like and then track your reading using the Beanstack app (or website). All you have to do is keep track of how many minutes you've read (or paper logs are available in the Library and on our website). The Beanstack app has a built-in stopwatch, but you can also use any form of timekeeping and then enter that number of minutes into your Beanstack account. In the app you will win badges, prizes, and raffle tickets as you go. Some examples of prizes include Friends of the Library tote bags, protective book sleeves, a super soft and cozy reading cushion, and the grand raffle prize of a Samsung tablet (compatible with both Overdrive/Libby and hoopla).

Main Desk librarian, Amy, shares: "I just listened to Deadly Education by Naomi Novik on Libby and I absolutely loved it! The Scholomance is a school that 'teaches' young magical students of different disciplines. The kids learn to survive by working together and watching each others' backs. The main character, El, is tough and independent but is also lonely and learns through a series of events that friendships are not the worst. The hallways and cafeteria are especially dangerous and if the students do make it to class, there are no teachers, just lessons that appear. Dangerous monsters are lurking everywhere culminating in a huge project / battle. I did not want this story to end but I find comfort in the fact that is it #1 in a series! I would recommend this for anyone in middle school or above. You can also find the hardcover in our fiction collection on the main floor."

hoopla Recommendation

Main Desk librarian, Stephanie, says: "hoopla is my favorite way to listen to audiobooks. No waiting to download and no discs to change, and they have a wide variety of titles to choose from. I tend to listen to Thrillers. I just listened to Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica. I hadn't read or listened to her books before, but it kept me listening to this story of Meredith, a woman who works as a doula (and a yoga teacher) and her family. They lived in a neighborhood where people feel safe and tend to know each other. As we learn, Meredith disappeared 11 years previously, along with her 6-year-old daughter, Delilah, leaving behind a young son and a worried husband. Told, alternately, in her voice from the past and the voices of neighbors and her son in the present. It kept me listening as I worked on the computer, cleaned the house and cooked dinner! I recommend this to anyone who likes a good story and a mystery that will keep you guessing!

Could You Survive the Wilderness?: We will read a "You Choose" book and see if we can survive! This program is for kids age 8 and up.

Shadow Puppet Show: Watch a shadow puppet show on our YouTube channel! Find out How the Bear Lost His Tail followed by a short tutorial on how to make your own shadow puppets.

ASL (American Sign Language) Workshop: an informal program where we will learn the ABCs and 123s of American Sign Language. We will start with the manual alphabet (fingerspelling) and numbers.

Crafts: Playdough Porcupine: for ages 2 and up.

Woodland animal masks: for ages 2 and up.

Fluffy Skunk picture: for ages 2 and up.

*Children can drop by for crafts. Older children may attend independently, but younger children under 10 should be accompanied by an adult.

Drop-in Story Times: We will offer drop-in story times geared for children age 2 through 6, but all families are welcome! Bring a blanket and meet on the lawn.

Teen Summer Reading Program

The Teen Summer Reading Program, Tails & Tales, runs through August 6 and is free for any teens entering Grades 6-12. Pick up a reading log in the library or on our website. Read at least 2 hours a week for a Golicks coupon and a small prize plus a chance to win the weekly raffle. You can read anything including books, magazines, newspapers, and graphic novels. Read to yourself or read aloud to someone. You can even listen to an audio book. And do not forget, there are PRIZES! Answer Trivia questions and do book reviews to win candy. Reading logs are entered into a raffle at the end of the program. The more weeks you participate, the greater your chances of winning!

The Rochester Public Library is now open for browsing without needing an appointment. We are open Mon-Wed 9:00-8:00, Thur.-Fri 9:00-5:00.
