DOVER - The Woodman Museum invites you to journey through Pine Hill Cemetery with us on Saturday and Sunday for the annual "Voices From the Cemetery" re-enactment event.
As you walk the cemetery paths on a guided tour, you'll meet over a dozen famous and infamous citizens from Dover's past as they come to life at their gravesites to tell you their stories. Among them:
· Swashbuckling sea captains with tales of high-seas adventures and global voyages
· The first man to be hanged in Dover, killed in 1788, perhaps unjustly
· A woman taken captive by the Penacook in 1689 at the age of 3 months, who triumphantly returned to Dover 45 years later
· Dover's first postmaster, a surgeon during the American Revolution, who lived to age 101
· The most tragic pair of mismatched lovers in Dover's history
· Three women responsible for establishing the Woodman Museum
· Two 19th century NH governors from Dover, still arguing about political issues
· A pharmacist who'll present you with the keys to living a long and healthy life
· The first female president of an American railway company. What a success story!
· A famously renowned African American opera singer
· Dover's first mayor and his weary wife (who stayed at home to raise their 13 children)
· A story of undying love and devotion inside a mausoleum
· A lawyer, Civil War veteran, Dover benefactor, and prodigious speechmaker who loves an audience
