ALFRED, Maine - A COVID-19 outbreak at the York County Jail that may have been sparked by a single inmate brought there last month has now resulted in 54 total cases including 35 inmates and 16 corrections officers.
York County Sheriff William King reported the new cases on Friday afternoon. Others infected are two from the nearby government building and one from jail support staff.
King said that his department expects test results over the weekend for 85 more individuals.
On July 9 King reported that an individual arrested and brought to the jail the day before had been admitted after being found asymptomatic and free of the virus as determined by a COVID screening tool.
As part of COVID protocols he was subsequently tested and the test came back positive.
