THORNTON - A tire malfunction is being blamed for the death of a Massachusetts man whose car crashed on Interstate-93 in Thornton on Saturday.

The crash occurred around 12:50 p.m. when State Police say a 1996 Ford Explorer driven by Richard Rosa, 56, of Lowell, Mass., was traveling north on when it is believed his vehicle suffered a malfunction to its rear tire which caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and crash into the wooded median.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Rosa was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. He was taken to Speare Memorial Hospital where he died.

A passenger in the car, Marianne Rosa, 24, also of Lowell, sustained what were described as life-threatening injuries and was flown by a DHART medical helicopter to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.

I-93 was closed and traffic was diverted for about one and a half hours while the crash was investigated.

All aspects of this crash remain under investigation including causation. Anyone that may have further information related to this crash, please contact Trooper Derek Newcomb at 603-846-3333 or email at derek.l.newcomb@dos.nh.gov.
