CONCORD - Gov. Chris Sununu said today he will run for governor again in 2022, dispelling rumors he was about to announce a run for the U.S. Senate next year against Democrat Sen. Maggie Hassan.

Sununu's decision is a blow to Republicans who were counting on him to lead the charge to take back the Senate by defeating Hassan, who is considered vulnerable by most political pundits.

Retired Brig. Gen. Don Bolduc announced months ago that he would be campaigning for Hassan's seat, but he'll have to get through a tough primary first.

Bolduc lost his bid to run against U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen when he was defeated by Corky Messner in the 2020 primary. Messner ultimately lost decisively to Shaheen.

In his 2020 gubernatorial race Sununu crushed Democrat challenger Dan Feltes with 65 percent of the vote to Feltes' 33 percent.

Sununu has been saying all along he would make an announcement regarding his political future before the holidays.
