WINTER HARBOR, Maine - State Police and the National Park Service are investigating the death of a South Portland woman they believe was killed in a hit-and-run crash late Saturday or early Sunday.
Nicole Mokeme, 35, of South Portland, who was well known for her work in organizing nature retreats for black and indigenous people, was on the campus of the Schoodic Education and Research Center when she was struck.
State Police are asking for the public's help in locating a 2016 black BMW X3 SUV bearing Maine Registration 5614WM that may have been involved. The SUV is registered to a 35-year-old Raymond Lester of Portland.
The vehicle may have front-end or undercarriage damage, police say.
Anyone who sees the vehicle is asked to not approach it but call State Police.
Mokeme was head of the Rise and Shine Youth Retreat and was on another retreat last weekend when she was struck.
The State Police do not believe there is an ongoing public risk and believe this to be an isolated incident.
