Online Alzheimer's conference for Granite Staters set for Tuesday

The Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) will host a free virtual Alzheimer's educational conference for New Hampshire residents on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. as part of its 2021 national Educating America Tour. The conference, which is free and open to everyone, will allow participants to learn from, and ask questions of, health, caregiving and legal experts. To register, go to www.alzfdn.org/tour.

Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of The Dr. Oz Show, will be a guest speaker and share his family's personal Alzheimer's story regarding the diagnosis of his mother, Suna Oz. Dr. Oz will describe how the diagnosis impacted his family, as well as share tips to promote good brain health and healthy aging.

Sessions during the AFA virtual conference will include:

Brain changes in Alzheimer's disease and relation to treatments - Recent evidence suggests that the disease process likely begins many years, or decades, before symptoms become noticeable. Daniel R. Seichepine, Ph.D., Clinical Neuropsychologist and Assistant Professor of Psychology and Neuropsychology at the University of New Hampshire, will discuss the biology of Alzheimer's disease, how recent advancements in brain imaging may help early diagnosis, and how currently available treatments relate to brain changes in this condition.

Legal and Financial Issues with Alzheimer's Disease - When a family member is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, it is important to plan their long-term care and make sure you have the proper documents. David R. Craig, Esq., the first Certified Elder Law Attorney with the National Elder Law Foundation in New Hampshire, and Principal of the firm of David R. Craig & Associates, in New Boston, will talk about emerging trends in Elder Law and recent statutory changes in New Hampshire. He will also address estate and long-term care planning for loved ones with a dementia-related illness, while protecting their assets.

Planning for Caregiving, Resources & Support- Caregiving can be an overwhelming responsibility, especially for families who provide the majority of care for older adults. Todd C. Fahey, the State Director for AARP New Hampshire, will provide tips on how to best cope with the personal, financial, and health decisions caregivers must make while also handling the emotional rollercoaster and communications challenges of being a caregiver. He will discuss care planning, resources, and getting support for caregivers.
