Man drowns trying to help swimmer in distress

CONWAY - A 37-year-old man drowned Saturday trying to help a swimmer in distress at Conway's Echo Lake.

Safety officials say the incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. when the man was trying to assist another swimmer when he went underwater and did not resurface.

The Good Samaritan was quickly located by others on scene and brought to shore where CPR was performed. Emergency crews transported him to Memorial Hospital in Conway where he was pronounced deceased.

Responding agencies included New Hampshire State Police-Marine Patrol and NHSP Troop E, Conway Police Department, Conway Fire Department, and Echo Lake State Park personnel.

The incident is under investigation, however, foul play is not suspected. The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
