Maine man charged with depraved indifference in death of infant daughter

BUCKFIELD, Maine - A 27-year-old Maine man has been charged in the 2020 death of his infant daughter.

Trevor Averill of Buckfield was arrested Wednesday afternoon after an Androscoggin County grand jury indicted him on the charges of depraved indifference, murder and manslaughter earlier in the day.

The death of two-month-old Harper Averill dates back to July 22, 2020, as the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office responded to 592 North Parish Road in Turner for the report of an infant in medical distress. Deputies performed CPR and assisted rescue personnel with the child, who taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment where she ultimately died as a result of her injuries.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit South and the Androscoggin Sheriff's Department have been working on this case for the last 13 months and collaborated in their investigation with Spurwink services, DHHS, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner and the Maine Attorney General's Office.

Police have not said how the child was fatally injured.

Averill is currently being held at the Androscoggin County Jail on $50,000 bail.
