Lightning strike likely cause of fire that killed elderly Sandwich woman

SANDWICH - A lightning strike is the likely cause of a fatal fire in Sandwich on Thursday, fire investigators said today.

Fire, police and rescue units responded to 247 Bennett St. around 10:50 p.m. and found Janet Brown, 84, deceased while fighting the blaze.

The state Medical Examiner's Office made the ID after performing an autopsy today.

The cause of death was determined to be smoke inhalation, and the manner of death was accidental.
