DOVER - The Dover Police Department is warning the public throughout the region they believe a man impersonating a police officer has been randomly stopping and harassing motorists.

During the past week, the department has received two reports of concerning interactions with an unidentified male wearing a blue T-shirt displaying a police badge emblem.

In both occasions, the male, driving a black Ford Fusion with New Hampshire registration, followed other drivers, then confronted them when they stopped. In each occasion, the man claimed the police department was "watching them."

On a third occasion, a male fitting the same description apparently photographed and then briefly followed a citizen.

No weapons or blue lights were displayed during these incidents, according to a Tuesday press release from Dover Police.

Witnesses described the suspect as a short white male in his 40s or 50s with a scar near his mouth.

The Dover Police Department wants to remind citizens that while local police departments do operate a variety of unmarked vehicles, all officers carry proper credentials to include a metal badge and police identification. Further, any person with concerns about the validity of an officer's credentials is encouraged to call 911 or drive directly to their local police department.
