The aplomb on display during the Rochester Opera House's musical production of "The Producers" Saturday afternoon was such that theatergoers might have thought they were on Tremont Street rather than Wakefield Street.
The choreography, voices and impeccable timing and delivery was truly amazing with headliners Bill Hartery as Max Blalystock and Marcus Provost as Leo Bloom leading the way in this madcap Mel Brooks musical.
With unforgettable laugh lines like "Springtime for Hitler and Germany" and "Don't be stupid, be a smarty, come and join the Nazi party," the comedy is spoof-filled frolic that will perk up your dog days of August.
The strong voices and presence of shyster producer Blalystock and his protege Bloom only grow stronger as the hilarious romp through what was supposed to be a failed play become a hit to their chagrin.
Kudos also for Brad Reinking as Roger Debris and Alex Leblanc as Carmen Ghia who turn the Third Reich into a gay nightclub of farce.
Cameron Clements also stands out as the perky, precocious Ulla Inga, who has the moves and moxie to wow the leading men to a fare the well.
If you remember watching the Mel Brooks movie from the 1970s or the remake with Matthew Broderick and Uma Thurmond from the 2000s you'll love reconnecting with this offering of "The Producers."
Special kudos to director Jenry Towle who delivers another gem at the ROH and lead choreographer Reinking.
The play runs through Aug. 31, so there's plenty of time to take advantage of this late-summer delight.
