DOVER - A former Rochester man with a decades-long history of prowling and peeping Tom-type charges was sentenced on Monday to a year in county jail in connection with a 2021 criminal trespass incident near the UNH campus in 2021.
Christopher C. Crosby, 52, of Cape Neddick, Maine, was found guilty following a two-day trial last month that sought to overturn an earlier conviction in the UNH case, which occurred in the area of 77 Saratoga Circle in Durham on Oct. 29, 2021.
Crosby, a lifetime-registered sex offender who formerly lived on Myrtle Street in Rochester, has seen at least 36 convictions over 25 years from lewdness to indecent exposure to felonious sexual assault.
The Durham charge is a misdemeanor, and since he is appealing his conviction to the New Hampshire Supreme Court, he will remain free on bail, Assistant County Attorney Shawn Lampron said on Monday.
Crosby's last arrest by Rochester Police came in June of 2017 on prowling and violations of privacy misdemeanors.
Police first became involved in that incident after a caller on Lincoln Street told dispatch a little after 11 p.m. that he and a woman had seen a suspicious man looking through several windows at a nearby residence.
When officers arrived the subject was gone, but officers soon found a man matching a description given on Knight Street where he was interviewed by police.
The couple who had called in the incident later identified Crosby, who was then taken into custody.
Crosby, formerly of 10 Myrtle St., Rochester, was charged with one count of violation of privacy and one count of prowling, Rochester Police Capt. Jason Thomas said at the time of the arrest.
If and when the appeal is over, the court will impose the 12-month sentence, Lampron said.
