DOVER - A Dover woman is facing up to 12 years in prison after she was indicted in an assault in which she allegedly tried to take a firearm from an on-duty Rochester Police officer.
Whitney Hanks, with a last known address of 72B Sixth St., Dover, stands charged with taking a firearm from a law enforcement officer, a felony; and an enhanced misdemeanor A simple assault in the Sept. 4 incident in Rochester.
According to court documents, Hanks "purposefully attempted to take Officer Dominque Murphy's firearm against her will by reaching for Officer Murphy's firearm while it was drawn while Officer Murphy was engaged in the performance of official duties."
The second indictment on simple assault charges normally carries a maximum one-year sentence, but since it was allegedly carried out against a law officer, it carries up to a five-year prison stint.
According to the second indictment Hanks caused unprivileged physical contact against Murphy by "kicking her in the stomach."
The Strafford County grand jury indictments were handed down on Oct. 20 and on Tuesday.

An indictment is not an indication of guilt, only that enough evidence has been gathered to warrant a trial.
