ROCHESTER - All the residents of a Wakefield Street apartment house got out safely on Tuesday after a fire broke out in the building's attic.

The fire broke out at 120 Wakefield St. around 5:30 p.m. and soon after went to a second alarm drawing additional manpower from area towns, Deputy Chief Jarrod Wheeler said today.

The blaze, which was contained to the attic, was deemed under control a little after 6 p.m. Firefighters cleared the scene around 8.

While the four-unit structure was saved, smoke and water damage will keep it unlivable for a period of tiem.

Those displaced were staying with family or being assisted by the Red Cross, Wheeler added.

He said the origin and cause of the fire are under investigation.

Helping out with mutual aid at the fire were companies from Dover, Somersworth, Barrington, Farmington, Milton, Newington as well as Sanford and Berwick in Maine.
