Berwick man who died after falling ill at jail had recovered from COVID

AUGUSTA - The Berwick man who fell ill while an inmate at York County Jail and later died had previously tested positive for COVID-19 but had recovered prior to his death, Maine's CDC director said on Tuesday.

Jason Daigle, 47, was found in medical distress at the jail on Saturday and transferred to Maine Medical Center where he died on Sunday.

Daigle was arrested by Berwick Police on March 20 on a charge of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, and he was released on no bail pending a July arraignment. He was arrested again on the same charge in June and jailed on $2,500 cash.

During his time in jail he was identified as contracting the virus, but Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah said he was determned virus free prior to his death.

An outbreak at the York County Jail has resulted in more than 85 cases of COVID-19 among inmates and staff.
