ROCHESTER - We want to wish everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving. The Library will close Wednesday, November 24, at 4 p.m. and will reopen on Saturday, November 27 at 9 a.m.
Lights! Action! Closures!
We are excited about the new LED lighting being installed that will brighten up your experience at the Library. The downside is that we will have to close off sections of the Library to allow the workers to replace the existing lighting and to keep our patrons safe. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause our patrons. The Library is still open. Depending on the area being worked on, you may have to use a different floor to check.
Calendars!
If you're looking for a special gift for friends and family, why not get them one of the new calendars featuring scenes from around Rochester created by local photographer John Gisis, which even includes a beautiful one of the Library. The Friends of the Library are selling them, and they are available at the Main and Children's desks for $15 each. Just ask one of the staff at either desk to purchase one. For each calendar sold, John will donate $2 to the Friends.
Music Display
RPL Librarian, Amy shares: "Are you looking for some new music to play while gathering for this month's festivities. Check out the music display on the main floor. We have handpicked some folk, rock, world, and classical CDs that are sure to put your guests in a good mood.
Amy also has a book recommendation for kids:" This week's recommendation is for kids in grade school and above. Septimus Heap by Angie Sage, (you can find this in the children's room) is a unique fantasy series consisting of seven books. You will meet good and bad wizards, witches, a princess, a boggart, and of course, a dragon! The dragon is adorable but a little naughty. The main characters are always struggling against dark forces. Everyone works together and they are brave in the face of adversity. There is something for everyone in each of the installments. You can also find most of the books in this series on audio in the children's room and the downloadable e-books and audio books on Libby. This story was a favorite for my family to listen to on the road. Maybe it will be yours!"
Susan Schwake's Artwork on Exhibit
Main Desk and Art Liaison, Melissa, shares, "The Rochester Public Library is pleased to present the artwork of Susan Schwake during the month of November.
Susan Schwake is an artist, author, and art educator. In her artwork, she is inspired most by the natural world and the changes it goes through - both inherent and external forces. She often abstracts these interactions through simplification, distortion, heightened or changed color and viewpoint. She works with ink, acrylic, watercolor, gouache and paper on paper, panel, and canvas. Her work has been exhibited on the East Coast of the US, Mexico, and Europe.
In addition to teaching art at artstream studios in Rollinsford NH, Schwake has written several books, and paints most every day.

Children's Room
Treats from Potter's House: Children's Room Librarian, Christina says "The Children's Room recently hosted a Pumpkin Project. Participants were tasked with decorating a pumpkin to represent one of their favorite books or book characters. Anne of Green Gables, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, The Lorax, a Princess and George Washington were amongst the submissions. When the pumpkins were delivered to the Children's room each child received a free cookie coupon, redeemable at Potter's House Bakery. The Children's Room would like to thank Potter's House for providing the sweet treat."
Santa's Visit to the Children's Room: Santa will be visiting the Library on Saturday, December 11 from 10:30-12:00. He will be welcoming families outside on the lawn. Children will have time to say hello to Santa and have their picture taken. If you cannot make it for Santa's visit, there will be a mailbox for letters to Santa in the Children's Room starting shortly after Thanksgiving!
Story-Time-To-Go
Story-Time-To-Go will continue for those who prefer using our curbside service. Reserve a pre-packed bag with library books, a simple craft idea with directions, and a set of activities based on a certain theme by calling the Children's Room at 603-335-7549. These kits are geared for kids ages 2 through 6, but the whole family can participate! Please let us know which theme(s) you would like, and for what age range.
