The rites of spring feel oh so right

Yesterday we took down the sheets of plywood that protect the back porch from winter’s ravaging snow and ice.

It is literally a rite of spring. Now we can see the back yard from the office of The Lebanon Voice.

Winter blocks our view. It makes our world smaller. It makes us draw into ourselves.

It is always a time to rejoice when you can throw off the shackles of long winter nights and cold winter mornings and enjoy, even though it is still often weak, the warmth of an April sun.

After we took down the plywood sheets, we raked some leaves, but the wind was so strong, it was pointless.

So we swept the driveway pushing back the detritus of winter into the weeds and grass of tomorrow’s lawn.

Then, daresay, we brought out some of the lawn furniture, so we can now sit, sip a beer and look at the motorcycle and the back lawn at the same time.

Thoroughly inspired, we grabbed a Market Basket bag and headed for the street.

We know we were supposed to wait until Lebanon Cleanup Day on May 3, but we just couldn’t.

“What’s Cleanup Day,” you ask?

Well, let me tell you. Cleanup Day is when all the folks in Lebanon turn out on Saturday morning, May 3, and pick up the roadside debris that has been thrown by careless, unthinking, anti-nature, lazy, good for nothing, filthy, scummy motorists over the winter.

Anyways, if people want to help rid our town of this roadside trash, we’d love to have your help. The Town of Lebanon will be handing out trash bags and gloves on Saturday, May 3, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Lebanon Road Commissioner Larry Torno and his crews will be donating their time and out in force picking up bags beginning later in the morning. Transfer Station boss Ronal Patch and his crew will also be working for free to help the town get off to a really neat start to the summer.

By the way, remember when “neat” meant “cool?”

Anyways, back to Cleanup Day.

When the picking up of the trash is done, all volunteers will be treated to a free cookout back at Town Offices on Upper Guinea Road from 12:30-2 p.m.

Some of the merchants who have helped with donations include, Batchelder Sales, Salmon Falls Café, Triple J Feeds, Papa Gino’s of the Lilac Mall, Stokewood’s Diner, M$M Used Cars and Welch’s Hardware.

If any other merchants or – heck, will take money from regular folk, too – anyone else wants to contribute, contact Lebanon Voice editor Harrison Thorp at 432-2218 or email thelebanonvoice@aol.com.

The Lebanon Cleanup Day is sponsored by the Town of Lebanon and The Lebanon Voice.

But now, I’ve lost my train of thought.

Oh yes. So I couldn’t contain myself until Cleanup Day to clean up the roadside debris on my road.

So I grabbed a Market Basket bag and started picking up. As I started attacking one side of the road I noticed there didn’t seem to be as much as last year. The variety however, was still there no doubt: lots of Bud Light cans, a couple of plastic cups and straws from Cumby’s, a giant size empty container of Tide detergent, some Twisted Tea cans, some broken Bud Light bottles.

And that was just my stuff. Hahahaha. Couldn’t resist.

When we finally cleaned both sides of the street up to our neighbor’s house, they let us throw the trash in their barrels and gave us a beer for our efforts.

What a town.
