LEBANON - Elsie May Bernier will be the next recipient of the Lebanon Boston Post Cane.

The presentation will be made to Bernier, who turns 100 today, as soon as the plaque proclaiming her recognition is completed and returned to Town Offices, selectmen said earlier this month.

The awarding of the Boston Post Cane began in 1909 with the popular newspaper The Boston Post distributing the canes to towns throughout New England, to be given by town selectmen to the town’s eldest resident.

The custom was expanded to include a community's oldest woman in 1930.

Beatrice "Bea" Lord was the most recent recipient of the Lebanon cane. She died Oct. 19 at the age of 98.
