ALFRED, MAINE - A female inmate housed at York County Jail reportedly tried to commit suicide Thursday night by leaping over a second-floor railing and plunging to the ground floor about 12 feet below.

The 53-year woman, said to be distraught over her legal situation, according to a York County Sheriff's Office press release, made the attempt around 8:30 p.m.

The woman was rushed to Southern Maine Medical Center in Sanford where preliminary reports indicate she suffered a broken shoulder, two broken ankles, a broken nose and pelvis and a concussion.

An email from The Lebanon Voice requesting more information about the incident was not immediately returned. The investigation by the YCSO is continuing.
