MILTON - Friends of the Milton Free Public Library announced the winners of the high school "Fun Fan Fiction" contest on Thursday at a "Nute Week" assembly at Nute High School.

Senior Alana Hodson took the 1st place prize of $100. Alana changed the ending to Lois Lowry's The Giver. Alana's ending worked well with Lowry's writing style. Her writing was well crafted and seamless.

Madyson Alexander, a freshman, won second place and a $75 prize. Madyson also changed the ending of her story, Thirteen Reasons Why, by Jay Asher, giving a character the foresight to keep another character from killing herself.

Third place - and a check for $50 - went to Emily Douglass. Sophomore Emily changed an existing character's personality to change the plot in Stephen Chbosky's Perks of Being a Wallflower.

The judges of the contest stressed the impressive quality of all of the submissions, noting that all of the entries were well crafted. The reading was pleasurable which made choosing winners very difficult, since there was obvious skill and care in each submission.

The judges said they felt students demonstrated superior skill in writing for clarity in their summaries.
