Floating some ideas on boating with Fido

Many dogs enjoy boating with their people, and boating is a great way to include them in a family activity. If you're thinking of including Fido this year when you go out on the water, keep these tips in mind.

Swimming Lessons

If your dog is not a swimmer, work with him on swimming before going out on the boat. Help your dog learn to be more comfortable in the water while on the shore, not in the middle of a lake or the ocean. Remember that not all dogs are comfortable in the water and others, like bulldogs, don't have the body type to swim for fun.

Find a life jacket

Just like people, dogs need to wear a life jacket when they're out on the water. Even if your dog is an excellent swimmer, a life jacket is a must. Aside from helping your dog navigate difficult water conditions, a life jacket also makes it easier to rescue your pup should he fall overboard. In addition to coming in bright colors, which makes it easier to spot your dog in the water, dog life jackets are usually equipped with a handle on the back so you can easily grab hold of your dog in the water. Take the time to find a life jacket that fits your dog properly. This item can save your dog's life, so you want to invest some time into finding the best one.

Make a plan

What will you do if your dog falls overboard? Don't wait for an accident to happen to form a plan. Talk with your family or friends - whoever will be on the boat with you - about what steps you'll take to help your pet should they end up in the water and make sure everyone is aware of the plan.

Make the proper introduction

Give your dog a chance to get familiar with your boat before going on the water. By giving your dog a chance to sniff and explore, he'll be more comfortable when you bring the boat out on the water.

Start small

If your dog has never been on the water before, start with a short trip around the lake rather than an all-day excursion. Your dog will need time to adjust to the movement of the boat and it's very possible he may end up getting seasick. If your pet is suffering from severe seasickness, talk to your veterinarian about motion sickness medication.

Watch out for the sun

Your dog needs protection from the sun just as much as you do. The surfaces of the boat can become really hot with the sun beating down on them all day. Be aware of which areas get really hot and either keep your dog away from them or lay a towel or blanket down to protect his feet. If you're going to be in the sun for a while, find a pet-safe sunscreen to help protect your dog's nose, ears, and belly (especially if your dog likes to lie on his back in the sun!). There are also visors, goggles, and clothing designed to help protect dogs from sun damage.

Pack for Fido

Anytime you take your pet on an excursion, you need to pack supplies for your pet. In addition to food, remember to pack plenty of water for your pup. Even if you're on a freshwater lake, don't allow your pet to drink the water. There are a lot of contaminants and harmful bacteria in the water that can make your pet ill. It's also best to bring a first-aid kit with you anytime you travel with your pet. Kits should include items like antiseptic wipes and bandages.

And don't forget...

Your dog will need to go to the bathroom at some point, and it's very unlikely he will jump in the water to relieve himself. Plan accordingly and pack lots of bags, paper towels, and cleaning supplies to pick up after your pet.
