DOVER - Conor Makem, the former Foster's and Rochester Times reporter who was convicted in May for planting a camera in a woman's bathroom at the Foster's Rochester bureau, has been released from jail after serving just five months of a 12-month sentence in the county jail.

Makem, 46, pleaded guilty on May 30 to 19 misdemeanor counts of invasion of privacy and one felony count of destroying physical evidence for destroying the camera as the case was being investigated by police last October.

Foster's fired Makem immediately following his arrest on Oct 17.

Foster's later moved their Rochester bureau from their second floor Merchants Plaza office where the crimes occurred to the second floor above the Rochester Chamber of Commerce in the downtown.

Makem was released from the jail to participate in the so-called "step down" program with Strafford County in which inmates are allowed to live in a private residence while their movements are monitored by authorities and he is forced to wear a GPS bracelet.

The bathroom images of women "in various stages of undress" and all showing either buttocks or genitalia were taken between July 2012 and October 2013.

The "step down program" will allow Makem to begin a new job if approved.

If Makem doesn't comply with all portions of the step down agreement, he can be returned to jail to complete his yearlong sentence.

Makem also faces a suspended state prison sentence for destroying the camera used in the bathroom pictures, but if he stays out of trouble, his jail time for the crimes committed could be over.

He must, however, register as a sex offender for 10 years.
