Don't throw away that solo sock; make it a pet toy

Everything about owning a pet is expensive - even their toys. Fortunately, there are many inexpensive options for pet toys you can make with items right around your house. Here are just a few ideas using three common items in your house.

Jeans

My dogs may be little, but their little dachshund teeth are strong. So strong, in fact, they can destroy Kong toys meant for a Rottweiler. And soft stuffed toys? Forget it! Instead, I make them tug toys made out of my old jeans. I just cut the jeans into strips, tie three strips into a knot at one end, braid the strips, and then tie a knot at the bottom. Strips of fleece and old dish towels can also be used.

Socks

What do you do when the dryer mysteriously eats one of your socks? Use the remaining sock as a toy for your pet! If you have a dog, put a tennis ball in the toe of the sock and then tie a knot to keep it there. Socks can also be used to make crinkle toys for your pet. Simply take an empty water bottle, throw away the cap, put the bottle in the sock, and tie a knot in the top. Your dog will go nuts chomping on the toy and making crinkle noises. Are you more of a cat lover? Socks make great cat toys - just fill the toe of the sock with catnip (or a mix of catnip and cotton) and tie a knot in the heel of sock. And that's it!

Cardboard tubes

Don't throw out those empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls! Cardboard tubes make an easy toy for bunnies. For small tubes, fold in one end, put a few treats inside the tube (we like yogurt treats at the shelter), and then fold in the other end of the tube. Shake the tube like a rattle and watch your bunny have a blast tossing it around! For an even easier toy, take a handful of hay and shove it into the cardboard tube. Leave some hay sticking out of both ends and give it to your rabbit. Your bunny will love pulling the hay out of the tube and tossing it around.

There are countless other toys you can make simply using items around your house. You're only limited by your imagination!
