Capt. William E. Nehring died on September 2, 2014, in Rancho Murieta, Calif.

Born in 1943 in Northampton, Mass., Capt Nehring grew up in New Durham, graduating from Spaulding High in 1961 and Maine Maritime Academy in 1965 with a BS in Nautical Science, a Third Mate's Unlimited Deep Sea license in the US Merchant Marine and a commission in the U.S. Navy.

Capt. Nehring sailed for Mathiesen Tankers from 1965 to 1969. During that time, he cultivated a love for Japan, and served on the missile tracking ship Coastal Sentry Quebec that supported the Gemini space missions. Initially working for Mobil Oil, N.Y., as a marine rep, Capt Nehring remained ashore until Operation Desert Storm when he took a position as Second Mate with American Maritime Officers, returning to his true environment, the sea. Capt Nehring advanced to the position of Master with AMO and served on ships in the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command during Iraq War, as well as contributed to the relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Upon retirement Capt Nehring pursued his other passion, golf. Capt Nehring is survived by his son, William Madison Nehring; daughter-in-law, Catherine Nehring, grandson William Jonathan Nehring, brother Capt Curt Nehring, and friend, Carol Ponder.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in his honor.
